Golf Professional tips

Tip of October: «Practice chipping!».
17 October 2008
For the average amateur golfer chipping is where you can save the most strokes and therefore cut your handicap very quickly. Does hitting two lovely shots just short of the green and walking off with a 6 sound familiar? If it does then these little tips should help you cut your scores by at least 5 shots per round.

We are more than happy to introduce to our members a new option — monthly review of most frequently asked questions and tips of the Month given by Steven Dandas.

One question I ask all my students is WHAT CAN YOU DO EXACTLY THE SAME AS TIGER WOODS?

Tip of October: «Practice chipping!».

Set Up

This is where I see most of the problems arrising, golfers just dont set up properly to play this shot. Here are 5 key check points:

  • Hold the club about quarter of the way down the grip
  • Ball position should be towards the middle of your stance
  • Top of the club should be pointing towards your left thigh or feel like your hands are slightly in front of the ball.
  • Feet should be fairly close together and slightly opened to your target.
  • Your weight should be 60% on your left side.

The Swing

Now that we have set ourselves up correctly we need to go ahead and make a good swing. As always there is more than one way to do this but again, for your average amateur golfer the simpler we can keep it the better. Here is a drill and some key points for you to think of when playing this shot.

  • Place club under your left arm as seen in the picture
  • Then hold the club like you would if you were playing the shot, again same as in the picture.
  • Swing your arms and the club back and forth. What you should feel is that both your arms and wrists are fairly locked together, similar to a putting stroke.

Playing the shot check points:

  • Hold the club lightly
  • Place the ball towards the middle of your stance.
  • Keep your weight on your left side.
  • Keep your wrists out the shot, similar to a putting stroke.
  • Always accelerate through the ball.
  • Always finish with your belt buckle and chest facing the target.

All you have to do now is go and practice this. Please feel free to contact me if you need help with this or any other part of your game.

Happy Golfing !
